Now that you've bought a home in Berks County, it's time for the big move. As we all know, moving can be stressful. But there are ways to minimize that stress. You just need some planning and coordination to make it all come together. When you take it all one step at a time, your move will go much more smoothly.

Here are some things to consider doing to make your move into your new home in Berks County a success.

Where to Start

As soon as you know you're moving, go through your home and make a list of all the furniture and decor that you are not taking with you. This will help you decide what you can do without. Then take those items to a donation center or sell them. If there are items you may use occasionally, you might want to keep them and see if they'll fit in your garage or shed in your new home. If not, you may want to look into renting storage.

Now you need to hit areas like closets, the office, and utility room. As you go through your items, apply the 1-year rule. If you haven't used it in a year and don't plan to use it in the near future, do you really need it? Every item you get rid of is one less item you have to pack and move with you. And if you do need it down the road and it's not expensive, just buy it again later if you must.

Next, you need to consider if you're hiring a moving company or handling the move on your own. If you're moving on your own, do you need to rent a truck? Either way, do your research and make sure to read reviews. Once you have a list of 3-4 moving companies, make some calls for direct quotes. Try to schedule your moving day for a weekday and closer towards the middle of the month. Most moving companies will charge more for moving at the end of the month and especially on the weekend. Also ask the company about insurance, liability, and the details of their service.

Start collecting as much packing material as possible. Pick up more supplies than you need so that you don't have to make multiple trips to the store, including items like boxes, packing tape, padded blankets, scissors, and trash bags.

Do not forget to complete a change-of-address form with the postal service and notify your utility services. Also, contact all of your subscription services to remind them of the change of address. Make sure you are receiving all of your bills at your new home.

When you start packing, pack the fragile items first. You can pack heavier items in rolling luggage that you can roll behind you. Don’t risk getting costly valuables like laptops, jewelry, and tablets lost during the move; instead, carry these items with you in a bag during moving day.

For the rest of your items, pack them according to the room that they’ll end up in at your new home. Stick labels onto each box so you know exactly where the box goes on moving day. If possible, take the labels once step further by listing the items within the box on the label. This way, if you’re not unpacking everything at once, you won’t have to sift through three boxes marked “kitchen” just to find your soup ladle.

These tips don't cover every detail of moving, but if you follow them, it should help the process go much smoother.
